Slump, Plateau, Stuck...call it what you want, I'm knee deep in it

I'm doing my workouts, all is good with exercise.  But my weight is hardly moving, my motivation is stale and my eating is wobbly.  So I'm focusing on maintenance, trying not to throw the baby out with the bathwater and gain 5 pounds while waiting for my motivation to come back.  But if that happens, I'll survive.  It's not like I'm in a bad place really, I'm just not in a great place.  Treading water and continuing to take my own advice is where it's at.

So I'm totally out of points and I'm going out to dinner tonight.  I've been working on a bad habit of weighing myself too many times throughout the week so I know I'm not going to lose weight this week, maybe even gain.  But I shouldn't let that knowledge lead me to go off the rails tonight with the food.  I shouldn't...but I might.  Man, it's hard to stay focused in the summertime with all the social stuff going on.

Though like I said, things are rolling along with the exercise.  I had a nice treadmill run on Monday, followed by chest/triceps/core work.  Yesterday I did back/biceps/core followed by 30 minutes of a spin class.  Those spin classes are no joke!  I was working my butt off for those 30 minutes.  I left the gym feeling good.

Well, that's all I got.  Hang in there with me!

  1. Hey there Michelle, I wonder if what you're experiencing as stuck is maybe the frustration of having to re-lose those three pounds, which, by the way, you almost fully accomplished last week. Please remember why you gained that, and realize that is not your normal lifestyle at this point. Unless, of course, plates of homemade cookies are more an every day occurrence than I thought. Even if your motivation is low at this point, you're still doing the things that matter over time - following your gym workout plan, being much more active when not at the gym, doing fun stuff with your sweet kiddos, and tracking and making mostly good choices on the food front. It's the long term that counts, buddy. Look how far you've come, and I have no doubt you will make even more gains (in a good, fit way, not in pounds..lol) You're doing great!

  2. Motivation has been a lifelong struggle for me and all the things you have described are feelings I have felt myself. Especially when I know I'm gaining, I really have a hard time making healthy decisions. But I recently read someone's post that said if they messed something up at work, they wouldn't start sabotaging every project. And it's good to look at healthy eating that way. You can always get back on track. You're inspiring so many people. Hang in there and keep up your honest posts! :)

    1. Thanks Lyza! Most of my meals are healthy, fortunately, but it's been the social meals where I've been off track lately. Mostly that doesn't lead to poor choices later (unless I've been drinking - then all bets are off!). I had a really good, healthy eating day today. I know I need to string a bunch of these together to fire up my motivation. But it's hard with all the social stuff!

  3. I know all to well about being stuck, been there done that a few times. The key I think is to take a look at what you are doing. The smaller we get the harder it is to lose. We have to keep our bodies guessing. Also what is your current goal? to lose fat? Gain muscle? more definition ect.. If your workouts have been the same routine for at least more then 6 weeks try changing it up a bit. Also I wouldn't go by what the scale says anymore because any weight you may have gained could just be muscle weight. Don't beat yourself up about it either. We all have our times of weakness and it is Ok. just remind yourself why you went on this journey in the first place and just be proud of the strides you have made so far.

    1. "The smaller we get the harder it is to lose." I'm wondering if this is true. My current goal is to lose fat. Gaining more muscle would be okay too but mainly I want to lose the extra fat on my stomach, arms, thighs...you get the idea. Wish that desire were more motivating to me right now, but it's not, and you're right, that's okay.

  4. I have no doubt you will pull yourself out very soon. We all have times of lower motivation, and you are making good lifestyle choices the majority of the time. I believe in you!

  5. Hi Michelle, Congratulations on your weight loss! I know what a struggle trying to lose weight can be & how frustrating it is. I began incorporating the juicing of fresh fruits & vegetables into my diet about 8 months ago. I've found it to be very beneficial...it has helped me to lose weight, feel great & I have alot more energy now. Good Luck & thanks!
